You Buy and Price Falls,You Sell and Price Rises!

One say’s “I bought “XYZ Company” at Rs.2200 and immediately after I bought the stock price dropped to Rs.2000.” I feel sad. Another comes with a different version “I sold “XYZ Company” at Rs.2000 and it went up to Rs.2400 same evening” I made an imaginary loss of Rs.400 per share.

Solution:

You can buy more shares @ Rs.2000 and reduce your overall buying cost. This has to be done only if believe in the fundamentals,management and the future prospects of the company.

To do this you need to keep money ready.whatever money you have and want to invest,split it into two parts. Then keep 50% cash aside, only invest with other 50%.So if need to buy more of any stock when the price falls you have ready cash.

Also now if you have 200 shares of XYZ Company 100@Rs.2200 and 100@Rs.2000.Then the price goes up to Rs.2400. Sell only 100 of the shares.Then if the price further shot up, you have some shares to sell And participate in the rally to make money.

Next You sold the share and the price went up. The solution to this is never sell all the shares at one time. Sell only 50% of your shares.So if he price goes up later you still have the other 50% to sell and make profit.

The golden Rule is to first do your own analysis of the stock before investing and buy on tips. Also invest only in companies which declare dividends every year. To be sure that you are not investing in loss making companies.

Every Market expert advise to do your stock analysis before investing in the stock market.
But nobody tells you how.

NYSE Weekly Oscillator

The first chart is a NYSE Oscillator weekly chart that shows severely overbought indicators. An oscillator for the oscillator, ULT, is above 70, which is rare. The other three indicators, above and below the price chart, are also severely overbought. The four-week MA is at 39.85, which is in the region where the market is about to consolidate or start a downtrend (also shown in older charts).

The second chart is an SPX daily chart that also shows severely overbought conditions. Major resistance continues to be around 1,270 (upper monthly Bollinger Band). The first major support level is the 10-day MA, currently at 1,247 and rising. If SPX begins a consolidation next week, it may fall to the 10-day MA, which will rise to around 1,255 by the middle of next week. Also, 1,253 is a multi-year Fibonacci level.

There are many economic reports next week, following the Thanksgiving holiday week: Monday–Existing Home Sales, Tuesday–Durable Goods Orders, New Home Sales, Consumer Confidence, Wednesday–GDP, GDP Chain Price Deflator, Chicago PMI, Oil Inventories, Fed’s Beige Book, Thursday–Personal Income, Personal Spending, Construction Spending, Unemployment Claims, Auto Sales, ISM Index, Friday–Nonfarm Payrolls, Hourly Earnings, Unemployment Rate.

The market may fall into a volatile trading range next week. A lot of positive news was priced-in recently. However, inflation remains an uncertainty, although the market has been pricing-in the end of the monetary tightening cycle. Moreover, gasoline prices are still high, although down from their peaks, which may slow consumption growth.

Book Value Of A Company

Book Value of A Company is defined as the sum of all assets subtracted by the sum of all liabilities/obligations. In other words, this is what shareholders will get if the company is to cease operations immediately. The reality, however, is different from that. Book Value does not always reflect what shareholders will get in the event of liquidation. For example, inventory is stated at full cost (100% value). But, who would want to buy a bunch of Pentium IV chips if the company is not going to exist tomorrow?

Therefore, we cannot rely on book value to find the value of a company during liquidation. The rest of the article will help you conservatively predict the fair value of all the assets when the company stops its operations.

Cash & Cash Equivalents: This is the amount of money held in the company’s checking and saving accounts. Cash is cash. The fair value of this is 100% of the stated balance sheet value.

Short Term Investments: Short term investments is the money invested by the company for a duration of less than one year. Examples include: stocks, bonds or certificate of deposit. Short Term investments can be sold at 100 % of the stated balance sheet value.

Net Receivables: Receivables is the money owed by the company’s customers. Some of them may pay it back, some of them won’t. Net Receivables normally can be sold at 50% of the stated balance sheet value.

Inventory: Inventory is the supply of goods that a company is going to sell to its customers. Depending on the industry, inventory normally can be sold at 50 % of the stated balance sheet value.

Long Term Investments: The definition for long term investment varies. But, it is commonly referred to as investments with long term of one year or more. This includes an 18 month certificate of deposit, investing in property and so forth. The liquidation value of long term investments is 100 % of the stated balance sheet value.

Property Plant And Equipment: This includes machinery, factory equipment, company vehicles and others. Basically, it is equipment that helps the company functions. In liquidation, property plant and equipment normally gets only around 25 % of the stated balance sheet value.

Goodwill: This is the value obtained when a company acquire other companies above the net asset value. Goodwill is abstract, meaning that it does not have a physical form. Goodwill has a 0 % value during liquidation.

Intangible Assets: This is an asset from patent protection, brand name or other copyrights. Intangible assets has no physical appearance and its value depends on the cash flow generated by those assets. During liquidation, however, intangible assets should be valued at 0 % balance sheet value.

Liabilities: All liabilities need to be paid in full. Therefore, liabilities need to be paid 100 % of the stated balance sheet value.

It is easy to be complacent in a rising stock market. There is only one question they want answered and it is something like “What stock should I buy now?”

If you and your financial adviser have already created such a program, you likely already know the answers to the questions above. For the people who have set up a long-term plan, the best thing they can do is - nothing. Long-term investors in a declining market will do nothing that upsets their established program.

Market declines present an opportunity to discover how solid your financial program is. Any weakness will show up. That’s why this is a good time to chechk on four basic investment fundamentals to help you survive a down market - and perhaps even take advantage of it.

Diversify

Spreading your risk by investing in a carefully selected mix of mutual funds that invest in stocks, bonds and money market instruments is a good idea any time. In the global marketplace we have today, consider diversifying into an international or global fund. Although the U.S. stock market has an impact around the world, other markets move in different economic and national cycles. This strategy calls for investing the same amount at consistent intervals, such as once a month, every quarter or even every pay period. By doing this, you don’t have to try to guess which way the financial markets will move and you won’t be waiting around for the right time to buy.

Using the dollar cost averaging method is one way to take advantage of a down market. As you invest regularly, you end up buying more shares when the price is down. View a down market as an opportunity to buy good companies at lower prices.

Don’t Forget Those Dividends

Even when company share prices will be impacted by a bear market, this doesn’t mean that the companies themselves are doing poorly. Many companies pay dividends at the same rate during a bear market as during a bull market.

Market Declines Are Natural

A few facts that might help put market declines in perspective. Like the seasons, they are a natural part of the landscape. Since 1900, there have been 285 “routine declines” of 5% or more, 91 “moderate corrections” of 10% or more, 43 “severe corrections” of 15% or more and 26 “bear markets” of 20% or more. I Bonds: Treasuries With An Inflationary Kicker

There must be a touch of inflation in the air, since a few clients have been calling with questions regarding I Bonds. With the low inflationary environment of late, there hasn’t been a lot of press concerning I Bonds. But since we don’t know what evil lurks around the economic corner, it may be time to review what these I Bonds are all about.

Think of I Bonds as Series EE bonds on steroids. Like Series EE bonds, they are issued by the U.S. Treasury and can be purchased at your local bank. Federal income taxes can also be deferred on the interest they earn - for up to thirty years. Here the similarity ends.

Unlike EE bonds that are sold at a discount from face value, I Bonds are sold at face value. Currently, the face value of the various denominations are $50, $75, $100, $200, $500, $1,000, $5000, and $10,000. The government says that this should make it easier to keep track of the growth of the bonds, and this is important because the bonds not only carry a nominal fixed yield, they also carry a variable semiannual inflation yield as well.

Ok, let’s slow down here a little.

First, in May and November of each year, the Treasury Department announces the fixed rate of return for new bonds. These fixed rates will continue for the life of the bond.

Also in May and November of each year, the semiannual inflation rate is announced and this rate is added to the fixed rate until the Treasury announces a new inflation rate 6 months later. The semiannual rate itself is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for all Urban consumers.

Increases in value occur the first day of the month and interest is compounded semiannually.

The bonds will earn interest for up to 30 years, but are redeemable after just 12 months. However, if you do cash them in during the first 5 years, there is a penalty equal to 3 months earnings.

In person, you can purchase up to $30,000 of bonds annually. But, because the government almost never does things in a straightforward manner, you can purchase an additional $30,000 in I bonds by going through Treasury Direct.

Anyone with a valid Social Security Number can purchase I bonds, and they can be registered in single or joint ownership.

Series EE bonds cannot be exchanged for I Bonds.

Finally, if you’re like most Americans who have difficulty naming the various visages on U.S. currency, you’re probably going to fair no better with the 8 Americans featured on the I Bonds.

SPX Rising Wedge

The SPX two-year weekly chart below shows a rising wedge with a negative MACD divergence. SPX closed the week near resistance and in an overbought condition. Major resistance is around 1,270, i.e. upper weekly Bollinger Band. There are further resistance levels at the upper monthly Bollinger Band just above 1,275 (not shown), and at the upper wedge line around 1,290. Moreover, MACD is currently near resistance, and the weekly oscillator (ULT) is above 70, which is severely overbought for an index. Major support is the previous four-year high at 1,246. Consequently, the volatile consolidation that started last week may continue in December.

Economic conditions remain robust. Real GDP growth continues to expand above 4%, inflation remains tame at around 3%, and profits continue to grow at a double digit pace. Monetary policy is still accommodative and fiscal policy remains stimulative. There are few signs of strain in the economy with the unemployment rate at 5% and capacity utilization below 80%. However, commodity prices remain high (reflecting economic strain in foreign economies, particulary in Asia) and the housing market continues to boom, although slowing somewhat. Moreover, there are bullish psychological factors. Financial markets are pricing-in an end to the Fed tightening cycle, early next year, and money managers want their funds to finish the year with the highest possible returns. Consequently, SPX may hold 1,246 in December.

Economic reports next week are: Monday-ISM Services, Tuesday-Productivity and Factory Orders, Wednesday-Crude Oil Inventories, Thursday-Unemployment Claims, Friday-Michigan Consumer Sentiment and Wholesale Inventories. Any data related to the holiday sales season, oil prices, and comments by Federal Reserve members will also influence the market. Moreover, OPEC meets December 12th, which may cause an upward bias in oil prices next week. Last week, third quarter real GDP was reported at 4.3%, which was stronger than expected. Consequently, the market fell Wednesday on inflation fears. However, when the market realized inflation remained contained, it rallied Thursday (also, new money at beginning of month and short-covering contributed to the rally). Other reports last week showed strong output and employment.

If SPX continues to rise into the end of the year, then the MACD downtrend line will be broken. Nasdaq broke above a similar rising wedge two weeks ago, and it’s currently about 40 points above the upper wedge line. However, the SPX upper wedge line may hold in December, because roughly 15% of SPX are energy stocks, which are currently at relatively high levels (OIH, an oil ETF, closed above 129 Friday, while oil closed at 59.32 a barrel. In August, when oil rose to 70.85, OIH was just below 120). It’s likely SPX will continue to consolidate and trade between roughly 1,250 and 1,270 next week.

Here’s an illustration of why it makes sense to keep tabs on the cost basis of your mutual funds. Cost basis is the purchase price of an investment after adjustment for depreciation expenses and capital gains tax payments.

*Assume that in November 2005, you buy 1,000 shares of “ABC” Mutual Fund at $10 a share and elect to have all distributions reinvested. Your total out-of-pocket cost is $10,000 (share price x number of shares).

*You decide to sell all shares of ABC, at $12 a share, in January 2008. You have accumulated 100 additional shares over the years through your reinvestment of capital gains and dividends. You receive a check for your total return of $13,200 ($12 price x 1,100 shares).

*Assume you paid taxes on distributions from this fund totaling $1,100. The distributions of taxable dividends and interest were reinvested in the mutual fund. Your cost basis is $11,100 ($10,000 initial investment + $1,100 taxable dividends and interest).

*Your taxable gain is the total return minus the cost basis. You will owe $315 if taxed at the 15 percent rate for long-term capital gains ($13,200 total return - $11,100 cost basis = $2,100 taxed at 15 percent = $315).

*Knowing the cost basis saves you $165. If you had not calculated the true cost basis, you would owe $480 if taxed at the 15 percent rate for long-term capital gains ($13,200 total return - $10,000 initial investment = $3,200 taxed at 15 percent = $480).

Q:I’m a relatively new investor and have a couple of basic questions I’d like answered.

I just bought a mutual fund several weeks ago and signed up to have all dividends and capital gains reinvested. My last statement showed a fairly large capital gain distribution, even though I’ve owned this fund only for a short period of time.

Will I need to pay any tax on this since I had it reinvested? If so, will I have to pay taxes at my ordinary income rate versus the lower capital gains rate, since I’ve held the fund for less than 12 months?

A:All net income from a mutual fund flows to the fund’s investors. Funds are required to pass on capital gains from selling stock and bond holdings, interest, dividends and foreign sources of income to their shareholders. Funds also are required to end their fiscal years on Dec. 31 for tax purposes. Therefore, all distributions for the year are declared by the end of the calendar year.

Mutual fund investors are taxed each year on a fund’s distribution if they are invested in the fund as of the “declaration or record date.”

Distributions from funds owned on this date are taxable whether shares have been owned for a day or a year, and regardless of whether they are reinvested or taken as cash. The only exception is if the fund is held in a tax-sheltered account such as an IRA or 401(k) plan. Most fund distributions are made in late November or December.

It is common to avoid buying immediately before the distribution or “record” date, to minimize tax liability. Before investing in a taxable account, you should learn the record date and the estimated distribution per share of the specific fund in which you plan to invest.

If the distribution is significant, buy the fund after the record date and you will not receive taxable distributions for that year. If the funds being considered have a record date in late December and a significant distribution, invest in the fund family’s money market account. Then you’ll be ready to immediately transfer money from the money market to the mutual fund after the record date.

The type of income will determine how the distribution will be taxed. Interest income earned by the fund and distributed to the shareholders will be taxed to investors as ordinary income. Dividends will be taxed as dividends and capital gains will be taxed as long- or short-term capital gains, depending on how long the fund has owned the stock or bond that was sold.

It is unfortunate that you will owe taxes on the distribution from a fund you have held for a short time, but you may recover some of this when you sell the fund.

Keep track of all the dividends, capital gains and interest you have reinvested in the fund. This will provide you with a true cost basis when reporting investment gains or losses when you sell.

Because you pay taxes on reinvested distributions every year, your cost basis needs to reflect these. If you sell fund shares at a profit, a higher cost basis will produce a smaller profit, which lowers your tax liability. If you sell the fund at a loss, a higher cost basis will produce a larger loss, which can be used to offset up to $3,000 of taxable income.
